Linux distros notes.
- Lots of info [here].
- Mandrake currently has newest release.
- RedHat releases are pretty old at this point.
- Looks like Mandrake is built for i586, RH for i386 => Mandrake faster?
- I'm inclined to look at distros w/o fancy graphical config systems. Text-based config is friendlier for remote admin, and more likely to be similar from one distro to another.
- This is going to be a server, so features like fancy sound support, video players, etc. are immaterial.
- Debian's latest release is recent (Jan 2002). This is an attractive distribution.
- An [article] on distros. Also has some thoughts on Linux as a Windows replacement.

Looking for Linux server hosting. Systems typically have 1GHz or thereabouts.

Wow.
Co-located server hosting might be more affordable. We supply the computer, they hook it up to the Internet.
You might want to talk to Jonathon Lupa at CSI, he runs a co-located server through a friend's ISP. He might have some good information on pricing and things to ask for and/or avoid. --Sloman
