DWM:

In general, I'm not impressed with LW's security handling. During initial account setup, you receive a cleartext email that has your main account login name and password together in one message. I've run into several non-secure Web pages for setting up things that have passwords (like email accounts). I'll be writing to LW about these issues when I've gotten a little more familiar with their system.

On the good side, I had a little "accident" while initially setting up the account. I won't go into details except to note that I needed to have the account directories restored to their initial state. It took LW support about an hour to resolve the request, which ain't bad considering it was late on Friday night.

DWM 9/1/2001: More mediocre experiences with LW. Turns out that the site admin tools they provide (CPanel) are purchased from [burst.net]. They just upgraded them and broke scgiwrap's ability to deal with CGI script parameters, prompting me to rearrange the way the wiki is set up.

DWM 6/28/2003: LW changed the way CGI scripts are executed. They dropped cgiwrap, and now use suexec. This means that all CGI scripts now run as user spookydi in group spookydi. Hurray! This makes CGI programming for stuff like wikis, which manipulate files, much easier and more secure than the previous setup and the hacks I used to get around its limitations. Unfortunately, they didn't tell anyone about the change, so it broke some stuff for a while. Boo!
